3 Tips for Beginning a New Workout Regimen

It's the start of a new year and whether or not you're a big "2018 Resolutioner" January symbolizes a new beginning.

We're out of the shadow of the holiday season.

School is back in session after a long break.

The warm weather and sunshine is back in Austin!

With all these transitions and changes you may find yourself wanting to kickstart a workout regimen. Maybe you're completely new to fitness and don't know where to start. Maybe you're already on a workout schedule, but need a way to spice things up. Well, we are here for you! Keri's got 3 tips for getting yourself off the couch and into the studio.

1. Start with a plan.

Whether you’re looking to lose weight, build muscle mass, complete a marathon, increase flexibility, or just to enjoy a healthier lifestyle overall – you are most likely to see results if you are working towards a goal and can develop a workout plan that will help you achieve it. You’ve probably heard the saying “a goal without a plan is just a dream.” As with most things in life, consistency is key to success when it comes to working out. This means planning out your workouts for the week in advance and committing to sticking with it. Treating them like an appointment or a business meeting and scheduling them in advance not only gives you a level of accountability, but you’ll find that you’re less likely to cancel a workout when it’s on your calendar.

2. Mix it up.

To maximize your results and combat boredom, mix up your workouts. By switching up your workouts with different exercises, you’re challenging your muscles in new ways and are less likely to hit a plateau (or get bored!) And as you grow stronger, don’t be afraid to challenge yourself and push beyond your comfort zone and the limitations we impose on ourselves. You’ll be amazed at how your body adapts and the changes that happen as a result.

We are fortunate to live in a city that embraces fitness and offers so many options for getting fit and staying active, both indoors and outdoors. You’re bound to find an activity – or more likely – several that you enjoy and will be more likely to stick with. One of the things I love about Green Bird is that we offer a variety of workout types that cater to all different levels of fitness, while incorporating strength. From HIIT training to Yoga, there’s something for everyone. After my very first Barre class at Green Bird, I was hooked – and I loved the changes I started to see in my body after incorporating it regularly in my workout.

3. Have a good support system.

Sharing your plan and goals for your new workout regimen with family and friends can be key to helping you stay on track by providing support and encouragement. Additionally, having a workout partner can be a great way to increase your success when you’re working towards a similar goal in that you can motivate each other and hold each other accountable. After all, you’re less likely to ditch a 5am workout if you know your friend is also waking up at 4:30 and is counting on you to show up.

Group fitness classes are another fantastic way to enhance your workout regimen. There’s something about sweating it out with a group that pushes us to work just a little harder and keep going when we really just want to quit. As a group fitness instructor, I love seeing clients accomplish their fitness goals, get stronger, and improve their quality of life - not to mention the relationships they build with other clients and the friendly competition that takes place. Going to a studio like Green Bird provides clients with an outlet in which you can leave the cares of the day at the door and focus on your own well being for an hour.
